Sponsored Athlete Jimmy Archer is 3rd American
Auburn, Ca May 22, 2005- First Endurance triathlete Josiah Middaugh was the first American across the line and third overall at the US Pro ½ Ironman National Championship. The race was also sanctioned as the USA National Professional Long Course Championships. First Endurance triathlete Jimmy Archer was the third American across the line. Due to increased snow melt and flooding, the water temperature had dropped to 49 degrees and was cluttered with floating logs and debris. Lake Clementine was determined "unswimmable" the day before the race and the swim was replaced with a 3k run.
Middaugh made a strong statement by setting a blistering pace on both the first run and bike leg. "I was the first on the bike and decided that if I had a chance to hold off Whitfield (Olympic gold medalist) and Bjoling, I needed to build a lead on the bike." By mile 40, Middaugh had an eight-minute lead on the entire field. "I felt crappy on the second run, but it was a good fitness test for me. I used E3 throughout the race and knew I nailed my nutrition. I even placed an extra bottle in my special needs bag on the run turn around. At this stage in the season, I'm just not quite ready to go that hard on the bike and still split a fast run."
Middaugh now holds two National Titles: US Professional Xterra National Champion and the US Professional Long Course National Champion.
