Anthony Johnson racing for the First Endurance Triathlon Team, in only his second race of the season takes another impressive win. Over 300 competitors converged on the dirt and streets of Richmond Virginia on Sunday June 24th for a shot at a qualifying for Xterra Off-Road Triathlon Nationals and Worlds. When all was said and done Johnson out-paced all other racers in his category to take his second win of the year and an automatic qualification for Xterra Nationals in Nevada and the World Championships in Hawaii.
Johnson emerged from the 1,500 meter swim in the middle of the pack before entering the technical 27k bike portion. "I knew I had some time to make up after my swim, but I stayed focused and pedaled hard. I worked climb after climb on the bike course and was able to recover fully from each one." Johnson explained. "It was a challenge having to pass so many competitors on such a tight single track course, but I knew I was close to the lead guys when I finished the bike." Johnson did take the lead and never looked back posting a strong 10K run over flood walls, rock gardens, stairs and stream crossings. "This is the most fit I have ever felt in my life, but I know I can go faster." Johnson’s team-mate Robert Kunz also competed in Richmond and posted a strong 4th place finish for the men’s 30-34 age group. Currently Serena Warner, Johnson and Kunz are all ranked #1 in their category for the Xterra mountain regional title.
Johnson’s race schedule includes the first ever off-road Ironman in July, the Xterra West Coast Championships in August then Nationals and Worlds in Sept and October. "This is the most fit I have ever been, and Optygen helped get me there." Johnson exclaims.
