Yuba Lake, UT- First Endurance Triathlon Team recorded their inaugural victory on May 20 at the Miami Beach Xterra Off-Road Triathlon, Anthony Johnson and Serena Warner added to the list by taking the overall male and female titles at the 2002 Xterra Yuba Rock and Road Triathlon on June 1, in Yuba Lake, Utah. With a solid win over some of the nation's fastest triathletes, Johnson finished ahead of pros Grant Holicky and Neal Henderson and ahead of 2001 National Champion Andrew Feeney for his first Xterra win of the season.
Warner, 4-time Yuba winner and 2001 National Champion, continued to dominate this sport with a finish this year that was eight minutes faster than her nearest competitor. " With Ironman next weekend, I went into the race knowing that it was going to take some self-control to keep my heart rate down. I swam very easy, and rode pretty conservative. At T-2, I couldn't control myself and headed out for the hunt. I caught the leader at mile 21/2 and had to push those hills, I had planned on walking. Let's just say I will pay for it this weekend!" Johnson and Warner are all currently ranked #1 in their respective divisions for the Regional Point Series Championship.
Johnson heads to Virginia on June 22 for this year's first regional championship. With 300 athletes entered, the Xterra Richmond Championship will include many of the best Xterra triathletes in the nation. Johnson will attempt to keep the momentum for Team First Endurance going with a strong showingat the East Coast Championship. In addition to the strong Xterra Yuba finishes, the First Endurance Triathlon Team also opened some eyes with numerous podium finishes at the same venue in the Olympic Distance Road Triathlon. Tom Meiser took second over all for the men, Shelly Howe finished third for the women 30-35, Ryan Dolan finished first in men 30-35, and Steve Howe finished second in men 35-39.
