US Patent #6,399,166
Salt Lake City, UT- A double blind, placebo-controlled and randomized human study conducted at the Xi'an Medical School in Xi'an, China demonstrated performance enhancing benefits in humans. Rhodiola was shown to enhance blood oxygenation and decrease blood viscosity by approximately sixteen (16) percent. It was this study which was the basis for United States Patent #6,399,166. The patent states that "Rhodiola is especially preferred to enhance blood oxygen levels, to enhance working capacity and endurance, to enhance memory and concentration, to enhance cardiac and cardiovascular function, to provide antioxidant effects, to protect against oxidation, to modulate testosterone and estradiol levels, to modulate sleep, and to enhance sexuability."

The highest quality Rhodiola is cultivated above 14,000 feet in the mountains of Tibet. This rare herb is then standardized to 2.0%-2.5% 'salidrosides'. It is these 'salidrosides' which are believed to carry the blood oxygenating and uptake benefits. A second standardized active constituent 'rosavins' also seems to have benefits associated with enhanced endurance. Researchers believe that only Rhodiola growing at altitude contains the oxygen adapting properties.
Rhodiola has been used in Far East Medicine for hundreds of years as a general tonic. This Tibetan herb has been used in China and Tibet for helping people combat high altitude, to aid with lung dysfunction and as a physical and mental performance enhancer. Sherpas used Rhodiola in their tea to help them climb the world's tallest peaks without supplemental oxygen. This led researchers to test Rhodiola's effect on mountain climbers. Clinical research showed Rhodiola was found to significantly reduce the effects of hypoxia above 14,000 feet in mountain climbers.
