Triathlon Nationals
September 22, 2002--The best triathletes in the nation gathered in Lake Tahoe, Nevada to race for gold at the Xterra Offroad Triathlon Nationals. The grueling racecourse included a 1.5KM open water swim, a 10K trail run and a 34K mountain bike ride that climbed 2,500 feet in elevation. Every member of the First Endurance Off-Road Triathlon team qualified for this demanding race.
First Endurance triathlete Serena Warner rocked the course and took top honors by successfully defending her National Championship title as the fastest amateur female. Robert Kunz and Mark Warner (Also First Endurance triathletes) took fourth in the 30-34 and the 35-39 age groups. This was Kunz’s first attempt at nationals, while Warner improved on last years seventh place finish. Tom Knopp, another First Endurance triathlete, took the silver medal in the men’s 35-39 age group. Anthony Johnson (the youngest First Endurance team member) also improved on last years sixth place finish by taking second place in the men’s 25-29 age group. Johnson posted the fourth fastest amateur time of the day. In addition to the strong finishes at Nationals, Serena Warner, Anthony Johnson and Robert Kunz were also awarded the Rocky Mountain Regional Champion Titles.
All five members of the First Endurance Triathlon Team will get a chance to compete against the best off-road Triathletes in the world during the Xterra World Championships in Maui, Hawaii on October 27th.
